Which Certification Should I Do?

If you've found this blog, you are probably just been introduced to Functional Medicine and perhaps wondering how to practice it as a pharmacist. Let us be clear from the beginning: Certification is NOT a requirement to practice Functional Medicine.

We dive much deeper into this in our webinar: The Seven Steps to Becoming a Functional Medicine Pharmacist, which we highly recommend that you watch first before reading this blog. Trust us, watching this 1 hour webinar will save you countless hours of going down all the rabbit holes to compare the dozens of functional medicine certifications out there. We've done the research for you, and spell it all out in the webinar above.

Additionally, there is currently no one single board or organization overseeing the field of functional medicine. While IFM has established a new board that appears intent on standardizing and unifying the field, at this time in 2026, Certification is offered by various programs, and simply denotes that you have met the competencies outlined in that specific training program. It can provide a structured path to learning, as well as benefits such as listing in a public directory. In short, it is primarily a marketing tool that can help to establish credibility, but it in no way changes your scope of practice as a pharmacist.  There are plenty of pharmacists who are entirely self-taught in functional medicine over decades of mentorship, practice, and experience.

With all that said, here is an overview of the most popular functional medicine training programs and how they compare. Some offer ongoing registration while others are offered periodically through the year, so check the websites to see when the next offerings will be so you don’t miss a deadline to sign up.

Core Functional Medicine Training Programs:

🥾 Functional Medicine Pharmacists Bootcamp (FMPhB): This program is currently the ONLY program on the market that is exclusively available to pharmacists to help you start practicing functional medicine today! Over the years, we found many pharmacists would complete other trainings, spending 2-5 years and $5,000-$25,000 on certifications, only to find out that the programs do not teach pharmacists how to practice using our unique scope. Thus, the Bootcamp is an ideal first step for pharmacists who are committed and ready to begin their functional medicine journey. We also welcome pharmacists who have completed other trainings, and now want additional coaching support in growing and scaling their practices.
In just 10 weeks, you'll learn to leverage your existing pharmaceutical expertise to create a profitable business model by using the Functional Medicine Pharmacists' Patient Care Process™ (FMP-PCP ™), Functional Medication Therapy Management™ (FMTM ™), and 8 modules of clinical content in the Functional Medicine Pharmacists Foundations Framework.
We also cover all the backend setup you need to start your practice including business finance and LLC formation; understanding the law and scope of practice; integrating professional quality supplements, labs, EHRs, & nutrition; building your brand through websites & social media; and scaling to six figures and beyond. Upon completion of the program and submission of your final exam, 1 page business plan, and clinical case study, you will earn your Functional Medicine Pharmacist Certificate of Completion. Additionally, in partnership with Learner+, clinicians can engage in reflective learning opportunities that reward CME/CE credits for Reflective Practice.
Since you will be in a live coaching cohort with your fellow pharmacists, our 10 week program kickoff at the beginning of Spring, Summer, and Fall: March 20, June 20, September 20. (There is no winter cohort offered.)

💚 The Institute for Functional Medicine:
IFM is the original organizing body for functional medicine and offers the most well-known and prestigious education. There are a variety of courses offered by IFM from the free Introduction to Functional Medicine, providing 1.5 CMEs, the AFMCP program (Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice), and the Advanced Practice Modules (APMs) which each span upwards of 40 hours of robust, in-depth learning on specific foundational health topics. APM topics include GI, Cardio, Immune, Hormone, Bioenergetics, and Environmental Health. IFM courses are open to licensed healthcare providers, including pharmacists. To complete IFM certification, (FMCP), practitioners must complete AFMCP and all six APMs. A case report and certification exam must also be passed to certify.  It can typically take practitioners from 2-4 years to complete the full certification. Note: Students get a significant discount off AFMCP and APMs, so if you can manage pharmacy school and training then it’s an amazing opportunity to graduate way ahead of the game!

The AFMCP program (Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice) is a good intro to functional medicine for anyone, and a first step to decide if the full certification pathway (FMCP) is right for you. AFMCP synthesizes the latest medical research with a model of care that integrates each patient’s individual history, genetics, and lifestyle factors. AFMCP equips clinicians to design effective, personalized treatments for each patient. Through a combination of interactive video lectures, case studies, online activities, and quizzes, AFMCP Online delivers comprehensive educational content as you learn at your own pace. Experienced functional medicine clinicians teach you how to use IFM’s tools to improve outcomes for patients with chronic diseases and health conditions. After completing AFMCP, FMPhA membership may qualify licensed providers to be listed on IFM’s web-based practitioner referral network, Find A Practitioner. (This benefit is subject to the terms and conditions for the Find A Practitioner Directory.) This page attracts more than 100,000 new patients looking for healthcare professionals trained in functional medicine each month.

FMPhA Members receive complimentary Interprofessional membership to IFM which includes 15% off AFMCP and 15% all APMs. (vs. the usual 10% discount). FMPhA members also save an additional $100 if you choose to add on the full IFM Membership which includes the Find a Practitioner listing and access to NatMedPro.

💙 American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine:
A4M is technically about “longevity medicine" or "regenerative medicine” which to me is like functional medicine to the next level where we are not only reversing chronic disease but also the aging process itself. This group and training is likely the most useful if you are a compounding pharmacist or interested in aesthetic medicine or even peptides, as they have several pharmaci sts speakers like Jim LaValle and Sahar Swidan. A4M has a range of educational offerings, from Fellowships, Certifications, and Online Courses. Pricing varies widely depending on the program, but the Longevity Fellowship in Anti-Aging, Metabolic & Functional Medicine is normally $18,000.
FMPhA Members receive $200 off conference events, a 15% discount to the Supplement Certification, and 25% off Fellowship Modules.

đź’ś The School of Applied Functional Medicine:
(updated July 2026) SAFM is less expensive than IFM or A4M but still an investment, this program is also a commitment since they have shifted from the option of completing individual Semesters or independent Deep Dives, to a comprehensive certification program for the Applied Functional Medicine for Coaching (AFMC) credential. The learning style is “warm and rich!” Practitioners from all walks can do this program, from health coaches to doctors to pharmacists. Format is recorded video and live webinars combined lots of case studies and highly motivated peer group huddles via Zoom for accountability. Big focus on application of knowledge and building a thriving practice. Tuition is $3,600 per year, with payment plan options available at $297/month. The minimum length of time needed to become certified is 2 years, but some take up to 3-5 years. I also host a pharmacists huddle circle on Facebook for us as pharmacists to stay in touch and discuss the SAFM experience.

đź’› Functional Medicine University:
This program includes lifetime access for greater flexibility,  but the learning style is more “cut and dry”. This program was founded by a DC and can be completed by any licensed health care practitioner. It also includes ~12 hours of ACPE CE for Pharmacists. All recorded, and completely self paced with no time limit. The 200 hour program can be finished in a month or take years if you’d like. However, the webinar format looks and feels somewhat “old school” and there is little to no interaction with other students or the instructor, except for an online forum, so you have to be very self-motivated. They also offer a practitioner directory for graduates. It’s $4,595, and enrollment is offered in January, April, July, and October.

Additional Programs Taught by Pharmacists:

🧭 Orientation-Based Medicine by Rob Kress:
We are proud to partner with Rob Kress for his programs, including Orientation Based Medicine. Rob was one of the very first pharmacists I ever discovered in the functional medicine space. After getting to know him over the years, I’ve witnessed first hand Rob’s mentorship and unique way of practicing functional medicine.
FMPhA members also get an exclusive 15% discount on Rob's programs.

Health Coaching Programs:
I wrote a separate blog post on Health Coaching, as it is an entirely different scope of practice that is typically focused on behavior change, rather than recommending labs or supplements. However, some programs such as these listed below fall into the "gray area" where they will still teach you about these tools and how to use them as a "coach." Please do your research when choosing to practice in this way, as it requires careful legal language so that you do not cross into the territory of practicing without a license in another state.

🧡 Functional Diagnostic Nutrition: This is one of the original programs developed by Reed Davis that allows anyone to become a "health coach"  and access 70+ functional lab tests through their Medical Director Program (MDP), even as an unlicensed practitioner. It also teaches All-Natural, Drug-Free Protocols to help you Master Lifestyle Medicine with the H-I-D-D-E-N assessment and D.R.E.S.S. protocol, a “rinse and repeat” system that works for every client, no matter what they’re struggling with. (This actually goes against what we teach inside the Bootcamp as Functional Medicine Pharmacists, which is that there is no one size fits all approach, and that drugs can absolutely be part of a personalized plan.) But... for a non-licensed practitioner, protocols are the "safer" way to avoid being called out for practicing medicine.

🩵 Integrative Health Practitioner: IHP is open to anyone, whether a licensed healthcare professional or not. IHP is unique in that it is also a health coaching program (there’s a separate certification if you complete both levels and the mastery program). It also covers 7 different disciplines including Functional Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, Bioregulatory Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine & Herbalism, Eastern Philosophy, Traditional Naturopathy, Orthomolecular Medicine. There are two levels: Level 1 covers all essential steps of the DESTRESS protocol. Level 2 takes you in-depth through 7 different at-home lab tests (Food Sensitivity, Parasite & Bacteria Stool, Organic Acids, Omega-3, Adrenal Hormone, Thyroid Adrenal Hormone Testing, Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis.) There’s also a Level 3 “Mastery” option to obtain the Registered Health Coach (RHC).
One perceived limitation of this program is that they primarily teach and recommend the EquiLife supplements and testing kits, which are sold by Dr. Cabral. While I do think these are all good quality, they don’t really teach about all the other options available through Fullscript supplements or Evexia labs.

❤️ Women's Functional Health Institute: For those who are ready to focus specifically on women's health coaching through the functional lens, this is an AADP-Accredited (American Association of Drugless Practitioners) Professional Certification in Women’s Functional Health Coaching (CWFHC). It was created by fellow pharmacist Meg Mill, PharmD and uses her step-by-step system, built on the CELLYRA™ Method to turn your health passion into a profitable business. Whether you’re a seasoned coach or practitioner, an aspiring entrepreneur, or on your own healing journey, you’ll graduate with the clinical depth to get real results, the business strategy to fill your practice, and the freedom to coach from anywhere.

Pharmacist CE Options:

🩷 FxMedCE (free preview course here) is the main pharmacist CE training programs that absolutely worth mentioning in this discussion, so I gave them their own blog post here.
Often times, pharmacists have more knowledge than they give themselves credit for, but they seek a “certification” as a validation that they are “ready” to provide these functional medicine services… which is not required! You will forever be learning more, and a certification may actually be a distraction or procrastination from actually doing the work!

So if you are looking for CE, then these programs may be more helpful as it is functional medicine education by pharmacists and for pharmacists, with ACPE CE credits! FMPhA Annual Members get discounted rates for these live and on demand CE’s; the coupon code is found in the Members Only section under the Membership page.

▶️ Hopefully you found this post helpful! There are certainly additional programs out there, so feel free to comment below with questions. If you apply for any of these programs, I greatly appreciate you using our FMPhA links that are listed in this post, or listing FMPhA as your referral, as this helps support FMPhA and allows us track how many Pharmacists come from our group which then helps us advocate for more pharmacist content and CE in these trainings!

📲 Lastly, if you have any individualized questions or would like to talk through your specific situation, you can also sign up for FMPhA Annual Membership or join the Functional Medicine Pharmacists Bootcamp (FMPhB) to help you start practicing functional medicine today!
